3 cottages, probably 1 house originally. Late C17 and C18. Plastered cob on rubble
footings; rubble stacks topped with C20 brick, one plastered; thatch roof (No 6
replaced with asbestos slate). Row of 3 cottages facing south. No. 4 (Rookery
Cottage) is a small 1 room plan cottage on left (west) end with projecting end
stack. No. 5 is a 1 room plan cottage in centre and No. 6 a 2 room cottage at right
(east) end. Large axial stack serving back-to-back fireplaces in party wall between
Nos 5 and 6. 2 storeys. Overall 7-window front, 1 to No 4, 2 to No 5 and 4 to No
6, comprising a variety of late C19 and C20 casements, most with glazing bars. All
have C20 doors and No 6 has C20 gabled and slate-roofed porch. No 4 is smaller than
Nos 5 and 6 and roof steps down between and is gable ended to left (No 4) and hipped
to right (No 6).
Interior: No. 4 has good late C17 interior. Ground floor fireplace is rubble with
plain oak lintel, inserted bread oven and original mantel shelf with moulded plaster
soffit. First floor has late C17 ceiling featuring an oval panel defined by moulded
plaster rib and moulded plaster cornice. Cornice breaks forward over full height
cupboard with plank doors hung on HL hinges. Original 2-panel door also with HL
hinges. No 5 and No 6 were apparently rebuilt in C18 and show plain carpentry
detail. End (eastern) room of No 6 may be a later addition. Roofs not inspected.
