Public house. C18 and C19, modernised circa 1970. Plastered cob and rubble; stone
rubble stacks topped with C20 brick; thatch roof, replaced with slate over stable
block.
Main block facing south has 3-room plan with right (east) and stack and axial stack
between centre and left rooms. Rear block at right angles to rear of left room of
uncertain original function. It is now hotel accommodation. Rear block at right
angles to rear of right end has an end stack adjoining main house. The near end
was probably a kitchen with coach house and stables to rear. Rear of courtyard now
closed by C20 wall and entrance lobby. 2 storeys. Regular but not symmetrical 4-
window front of C20 casements with glazing bars and including a C20 curving bay
window ground floor left end. Entrance right of centre through C20 porch with
gabled thatch roof. Large inn sign is a C20 painted board left of centre. Main
roof hipped each end. Left rear block has C20 casements with glazing bars. Right
rear block is slate roofed and includes a C19 16-pane sash and narrow 13-pane sash
with sane blocked apertures. Rear courtyard screened by a thatched wall and lobby.
Interior : much rearranged in C20. Many internal partitions have been removed
crossbeams and in the bar areas. Nevertheless front block has roughly-finished
crossbeams and plain oak lintels to rubble fireplaces. Roof not inspected.
Coleford is a remarkably unspoilt and picturesque hamlet.
