Description

COLEBROOKE COLEFORD
SS 70 SE
3/123 Spencer House

GV II

House. Probably C18, thoroughly refurbished and extended circa 1980. Plastered
cob on rubble footings; cob stack with C20 plastered chimney shaft; circa 1980 roof
of interlocking concrete tile (once thatch).
Original house has 2-room plan facing south-east with rear lateral stack to left
(south-west) roan and C20 service block at right angles to rear. 2 storeys.
Irregular 2-window front of late C19 and C20 casements, most with glazing bars.
Roughly central C20 door. Left end wall corner is rounded. Low-pitched roof is
half-hipped to left.
Interior is largely result of circa 1980 renovation at which time roof structure
and slates removed along with first floor structure of right room. Left room has
plain joist ceiling and stone rubble fireplace with plain oak lintel and upended
slate floor.
Spencer House is included for group value because it adjoins Spencer Cottage (q.v.)
to right and occupies prominent site in a remarkably unspoilt and picturesque
hamlet.
