Cottage, formerly cottage and workshop. C17 and C18. Plastered cob on rubble
footings; cob or stone rubble stack topped with C20 brick; thatch roof.
Former workshop and 1-room plan cottage to right (west) facing north. The former
workshop is broader than the cottage and protrudes to rear and is now occupied by
front entrance hall and service room with another room to rear. Cottage has right
end stack in party wall. 2 storeys. Irregular frontage comprising a ground floor
and 2 first floor windows, a variety of late C19 casements and fixed pane windows
with glazing bars. The break between the former workshop and cottage is marked by
a slight change in frontage which dies at about first floor level. C19 plank door
is set roughly in middle of workshop end. Victorian post box set into wall at left
end. Wall plate shows below eaves. Roof carries through continuously from
adjoining Tudor Cottage (q.v.) to left to Gremlin Cottage (q.v.) to right.
Interior the left end has a massive axial bean with a minimum of finish, mostly
waney. Lack of finish and absence of fireplace suggests that this end originally
served some workshop or storage function. Right end has plainly finished axial
beam and C17 fireplace; rubble sides with soffit-chamfered and scroll stopped
cambered lintel, and including a C19 brick-lined oven with cast-iron door. C18
roof throughout of A-frame trusses with lap-jointed collar beams and X-apexes.
Wayside apparently once connected with adjoining Gremlin Cottage (q.v.).
Coleford is a remarkably unspoilt and picturesque hamlet.
