House, former Mill House. Probably C16 with C17 and later alterations and
extensions, modernised circa 1975. Plastered cob on rubble footings; brick and
rubble stacks with C19 brick tops; wheat reed thatched roof. Long range built
across steep south-east facing slope overlooking foundations of watermill. Right
end is terraced into hillside, the rest is built up on an exposed stone plinth,
patched in parts with C18 brick. Originally a 3-room-and-through-passage house
with inner room to south-west (left of front) and extended 1 bay at that end in
C19. Hall stack backing onto passage, axial stack to inner room on former gable
end and C20 axial stack in service end. Cob internal partitions. Newel stair
turret to rear of inner room. 2 storeys, the service end comprising rooms off the
passage over stable or byre in basement terraced into hillside. Irregular 6-window
front. The right half of front wall (passage and service end) is set slightly
forward of rest. Passage door immediately right of break with flight of stone
steps down to ground level. To right 2 C19 3-light wooden casements with glazing
bars to service end above stable/byre door left of similar 2-light casement window.
To left narrow single light and 3-light casement to hall, and 2-light casement to
inner room, all similar to those to service room. Above the 2 dormers with
thatched gable roofs have C19 casements with small rectangular glass panes. The 3-
light window over the hall retains a C17 ovolo-moulded lintel. C19 extension at
left end has a 2-light casement. The line of the eaves is irregular and the roof-
line drops sharply right of hall stack. Roof is hipped each end.
Interior. C20 plasterwork and fittings hide early fabric of service end and flat-
roofed rear outshot added circa 1975. Hall has C18 brick fireplace with cambered
oak lintel and contains large side-oven to left. The 2 mid C17 crossbeams are
chamfered with bar-runout stops and the 2-bay roof above is supported on a side-
pegged jointed cruck truss. The roofspace is inaccessible but the timbers are said
to be smoke-blackened from original open hearth fire in hall. C17 oak doorframe to
rear of inner room leads to contemporary oak newel stair in cob turret which
includes an oak 2-light, ovolo-moulded window frame. A contemporary oak 3-light
window with ovolo-moulded mullions over rear passage door.
