Farmhouse. Early C16 origins, mid and late C17 improvements, extensively
refurbished in mid-C19. Plastered cob on rubble footings; stone stacks with C19
brick tops; thatched roof. Probably derived from a 2- or 3-room-and-through-
passage plan but C19 improvements hide former arrangement. Gable ended main block
facing east with 3-room plan. Cob cross wall between southern and central rooms
and C17 kitchen block behind central room. Other C19 and C20 extension to rear.
Gable-end stack to southern room (left of front), disused corner stacks to the
other front rooms, and large lateral stack to kitchen. 2 storeys with attic over
left end. Irregular 4-window front of C20 wooden casements. Door right of centre
to centre room and iron-framed French window at right end. In left gable a late
C17 pine 2-light attic window with flat faced mullion.
Interior thoroughly refurbished in mid C19 and many C16 and C17 details are
probably hidden. South room has C17 volcanic ashlar fireplace with oak lintel and
broad beaded surround. Part of large volcanic ashlar fireplace and oven exposed in
kitchen. Roof shows only evidence of C16 origins. 3-bay section to north has
smoke blackened purlins and common rafters from open hall house with open hearth
fire, but original trusses replaced in C17 with oak A-frames with dovetail, lap-
jointed collars. Attic to south has later C17 A-frame truss with plain pegged lap-
jointed collar and front wall shows evidence of the former half-dormers.
