GV II
Family vault of the Gray family. First burial was that of
Alderman Jonathan Gray, died 11 December 1837. Stone. Vault is
closed by sloped cover inscribed with the names of Jonathan
Gray, his widow, Mary, died 1849, and other members of his
family. Vault is covered by crocketed octo-pyramidal canopy
raised on cinquefoiled arches beneath crocketed ogee
hoodmoulds. At each corner are paired angle buttresses which
rise into crocketed pinnacles. Canopy is crowned with crocket
finial.
Alderman Gray was a founder member and first Chairman of the
York Public Cemetery Company. Although he died at Hastings
where he was buried, his monument erected over the family
vault is one of the earliest in the York Cemetery and is
depicted on an isometric plan of 1842.
