Row of 4 houses forming part of terrace row; with attached
verandah. Probably c1847-50 (not shown on OS map surveyed in
1847); altered. Painted stucco, slate roof and stuccoed
chimneys; cast-iron verandah. Double-depth plan, each house
single-fronted, built as 2 pairs with doorways to left and
right in each pair; with back extensions.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, each pair having 5 first-floor windows of
which the centre in each case is blind; with painted quoins to
left of No.9 and a painted pilaster to right of No.12, a
continuous sill-band and oversailing bracketed eaves with
moulded gutter cornice. At ground floor each has a wide
doorway with side-windows, panelled door and 3-pane overlight
(except No.11 which has 4 panes); and a large canted bay
window with 4-pane sashed glazing, except at No.12 which has 6
tall panes in each leaf. At 1st floor Nos 9 to 11 have windows
with shouldered architraves except that to left at No.11 which
is a canted oriel, and No.12 has 2 similar oriels with
dentilled cornices, all these windows sashed and most 4-paned
but those at No.9 without glazing bars. Nos 9 and 10 have
various skylights, Nos 11 and 12 each have a pair of small
round-headed dormers. Corniced chimneys with cornices on front
slope. The attached verandah, though variously painted, is
uniform, 4 bays to each house, with attractive open-work
standards, scrolled brackets and elaborate frieze; surmounted
at No.12 by delicate hooped railings with dogbars.
INTERIORS: not inspected.
Forms group with Nos 6, 7 and 8 adjoining to left (qv), and
with No.13 adjoining to right (qv).
All the listed buildings in Marine Terrace, together with
those in Adelaide Terrace, Bath Street, Beach Lawn and Marine
Crescent, form a group in the Waterloo Conservation Area of
Crosby.
