Former county court. c1875, with mid C20
alterations. By JG Sorby. Ashlar and brick, with ashlar
dressings and slate mansard roof. Italianate style.
Vermiculated plinth, channelled rustication, first floor
cornice and impost band, modillion main cornice and
balustrade. 2 storeys plus attics and basement; 11 x 5
windows. Windows are mainly wooden framed casements and French
windows. Main front, to Bank Place, has 9 recessed windows
with cornices and balustrades, divided by Ionic pilasters and
with lunettes above them. On either side, a similar window
with voussoirs. Above, a tall attic storey with supporting
volutes and dentillated cornice, with 4 similar windows under
pediments and blank lunettes. Ground floor has 10 windows with
voussoirs, and to left, a door in a similar opening. 6
basement openings.
Right return, to St Peter's Gate, has similar fenestration,
with 3 French windows under lunettes, flanked by single
windows with voussoirs. Above, a pedimented dormer with a
round-arched opening, flanked to left by a mansard roof with 2
windows. Below, a central panelled double door with the Royal
arms in a panel above it, flanked by single windows. To left,
a blank, and to right, a double door with overlight. All these
openings have voussoirs.
