Railway station, 1849 by Frederick Barnes of Ipswich. In the Jacobean style.
A symmetrical composition comprising a single-storey central booking hall, and
a pair of 2 storey wings each with a flanking staircase tower. On each side
is a screen wall with a gateway giving access to the platforms. Red brick,
with much use of gault brick for dressings. A little diaperwork in burnt
headers. Cornices and string courses of Caen limestone. Plaintiled roofs
with parapets and parapet gables (the latter were formerly of Dutch gable
form, and the crenellated parapets of the towers replacecupola roofs).
Chimneys of gault and red brick with clusters of 2 and 4 octagonal shafts with
moulded bases. Deeply-splayed windows in gault brick frames, and heavy wooden
mullions and transomes. Each wing has a shallow 2-storey bay window. The
central entrance is in the Baroque manner with rusticated pilasters framing an
inset doorway with an arch of limestone; the flanking platform gateways are of
similar but plainer form. A flat canopy is cantilevered over the platform,
supported on cast-iron columns and with a trelliswork valance. The building
is partly subdivided for light industrial use.
