- Nos. 1 and 2 Norton Cottages
GV II
2 cottages. Formerly 3 cottages. Late C19 with extension of circa 1960.
Plastered cob on rubble footings, circa 1960 brick extension; stone rubble stacks
with C19 and C20 brick chimney shafts; thatch roof.
Originally three 1-roan plan cottages facing east. The left (southern) pair are
now joined as No. 1 Norton Cottages. The right cottage with the circa 1960
extension on the end now makes up No. 2 Norton Cottages. The left end former
cottage (No. 1) has a projecting end stack, the other 2 former cottages have outer
axial stacks. The left end cottage and circa 1960 extension are 2 storeys, the 2
former cottages between are 2 storeys with attics.
Overall 4-window front, 1 to each unit. The original cottages have late C19
casements with glazing bars and extension has circa 1960 iron-framed casements
without glazing bars. The 2 former cottages to centre (No. 1) and right (No. 2)
have symmetrical 2-window arrangement rising above flanking blocks. The doors are
paired in the middle and under the eaves are twin fixed pane lights to the attics.
Roof is hipped each side and flanked by chimney shafts. The former cottage to left
(Now 1) has outer windows and a similar plank door on inner side. Roof is hipped.
The circa 1960 extension to right (No. 2) also has a door on inner side. Its roof
is flat.
Interiors are little modernised and show plain carpentry detail where exposed.
