House, now house pair. C15 or early C16, with C16 or C17 cross-wing and
C18 alterations. Timber framed. Ground floor red and grey brick in a
Flemish-type bond, first floor rendered. Wing chequered red and grey brick
to front. Plain tile roof. Open hall of 2 timber-framed bays, with
storeyed end bays. C16 or C17 cross-wing added to left of storeyed left
end bay, flush to front, projecting slightly to rear. Main range 2
storeys and cellar, on brick plinth, wing 2 storeys and attics. Gable
end jetty to right. Left gable end of main range jettied before addition
of left cross-wing, and now underbuilt. Higher eaves and ridge to cross-
wing, and roof hipped to front. Roof of main range hipped to right.
Brick ridge stack to right hall bay and to brick stack to left side of
wing. Small hipped dormer to wing. Irregular fenestration of 5 windows;
one 4-pane sash to wing, and three 3-light casements and one 2-light to
main range. 2 tripartite sashes to ground floor of main range. Rear door
to The Cottage West to left. Two half-glazed doors with shallow flat
bracketed hoods to The Cottage, one to left end of main range, one under
stack. Rear lean-to. Short late C19 or early C20 two-storey red brick
addition with hipped roof, to left side of cross-wing. Interior: only
partly inspected. Moulded left end-of-hall beam with evidence for spear,
and with chamfered rectangular doorway under it to rear. Exposed joists
to storeyed left end bay of main range, with evidence for stairs and end
jetty. Gunstock-jowled posts. Hollow-chamfered cambered central tie-
beam, pegged for heavy-scantling arch braces. Axial tie-beam to right
end bay, with solid-spandrel brace. C18 corner cupboard to left hall bay.
