Pair of cottages including Post Office and adjoining range to rear, originally
possibly 2 houses or 1 house with service wing. Late C15 or early C16 remodelled
C16-C17 and C20. Rendered and painted cob walls, dry slate roof with gable ends,
brick chimney over left-hand gable and tall brick shaft over external lateral breast
to front wall right of middle. Probably originally 2 houses at right-angles, each
with 3-room through- or cross-passage plans. Main range probably truncated to
right. 2 storeys. Irregular 6-window north-west front. Five 12-pane 2-light
casements to first floor. Ground floor has C20 3-light casement to left; doorway
with C20 top-glazed door and C20 open gabled hood on wooden brackets; C20 3-light
casement to right of chimney breast and top glazed 4-pane door to right. Wing has
north-east front with 3 windows to ground floor alternating with wide doorways with
old planked doors. Windows are probably C17 oak, with chamfered mullions and some
surviving diagonally set bars. No glazing. Doorway to first floor over left
window. Roof is monopitch. C20 corrugated iron sloping down to rear.
Interior of main range has smoke-blackened jointed cruck oak roof structure with
morticed, cambered collars seen in roof space of right. Lower end (left) only
partly inspected but morticed apex of truss visible not smoke-blackened. Hall has
lateral fireplace with dressed volcanic stone jambs and oak lintel all with ovolo-
moulding; probably inserted late C16. Wide chamfered and stopped cross beams to
middle room and axial beam to far left room at lower end, probably also late C16.
Cross beam at slightly lower level to far right with wide chamfer and stepped and
scrolled tongue stop is probably earlier. Interior of wing has cross beam with wide
chamfer and similar stop in lower room. Other end of beam is forked as grown.
Fireplace to this room at gable end has similar stops to lintel and oven with arched
doorway. Large curved recess to right of fireplace may be stair position. Second
room has axial beam and original joists. Upper room not inspected. C20 roof
structure.
