Stable block. C17, by William Thornton (Pevsner); altered. Magnesian
limestone, stone slate roof. H-plan. Two storeys, symmetrical; dripcourse
carried round the whole; in the centre, a round-headed doorway (doors
altered) with emphatic semicircular head of gauged voussoirs within a raised
outer band breaking the dripcourse, and close to the angle of each wing a
smaller door; 4 cross-windows at ground floor, and another window over the
left-hand door; five 2-light mullioned windows at 1st floor and a smaller
window at each end; the wings have a door and a transomed window at ground
floor, a mullioned window at 1st floor, and their gables both have one
cross-window at ground floor and 2 above, these with a drip-band over them;
gable copings with kneelers which do not project, and apex chimneys. The
return walls of the wings have cross-gables of the main range, and less
regular fenestration, mainly at 1st floor, including a cross-window in the
west gable, and the gables are finished like the others. The rear is similar
to the front except at ground floor of the main range, which is mostly blind.
