Public library. 1876, with late C20 alterations. By E Mitchell
Gibbs. Brick with ashlar dressings and gabled and hipped slate
roofs with decorative crest, coped gables and finials.
Truncated square roof ventilator. Italianate style.
EXTERIOR: plinth, sillbands, first floor band, modillion
eaves, coped parapet. 2 storeys; 6 window range.
Central square tower porch with hipped roof has on the first
floor 2 round-arched 2-light windows with moulded arches and
roundels in the heads. Below them, a stone balcony on
brackets, with roundel-pierced balustrade. Moulded
round-arched ashlar doorcase with coat of arms in tympanum,
and above, lintel inscribed "Free Public Library Upperthorpe
Branch". Late C20 glazed double doors, steps and ramp. Each
return has a round-arched 2-light window above, and a stone
mullioned cross casement below. Side bays have each 2
round-arched double lancets with moulded heads and roundels,
and linked hoodmould. Below, 2 stone mullioned cross
casements.
Right gable has on the first floor a canted stone oriel window
with hipped roof and modillion cornice. 2-light round-arched
window flanked by similar single windows, each with a roundel
above it. Beyond, single light round-arched windows with
square panels above them containing roundels, all with linked
label moulds. Above, a 2-light stone mullioned opening with
louvres. Below, a segment-headed cross casement, flanked by
integral brackets to the oriel. On either side, a single light
flat-headed window with transom. To right, a plainer range, 2
storeys, with off-centre 3 storey gable and 7 unequally spaced
windows.
INTERIOR not inspected.
The design is almost identical to Highfield Public Library,
London Road (qv), also by E Mitchell Gibbs.
