School and boundary wall

Methodist church and school, now housing a training project,
with adjoining boundary wall and railing. Dated 1880, altered
c1980. Coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and steep
pitched slate roofs. Gothic Revival style. Built on a sloping
site with basement rooms below the church and the school at a
lower level to the east. Nave with aisles and east wing
containing business rooms, transepts and west porches, and
schoolroom.
EXTERIOR: plinth, string courses, gabled buttresses, coped
gables. 4 bay nave has octagonal turret topped with spire. On
either side, a pair of through-eaves gabled dormers with
2-light pointed arch windows, flanked by single flat-headed
windows. Below, 4 pairs of round-headed windows, and
round-headed basement windows on the south side. West gable
has 2 pairs of lancets and a round window above them. Below,
central lean-to porch with moulded pointed doorway under a
coped gable with finial. To left, a square 2 storey porch with
pyramidal roof. Segment-headed doorway to west, and a 2-light
mullioned window above to west and north. To right, a canted
porch with a segmental pointed door and on each side a small
2-light window under the eaves. On the right return, a taller
gabled stair turret.
East wing, 3 storeys, has a double gabled north front with a
central triple mullioned window flanked to left by a 3-light
cross casement and to right by a 2-light mullioned window.
Above, to right, a cross mullioned window. Below, a double
door with overlight, flanked to left by 2 single windows and
to right by 3 similar windows. Transepts have 2 pairs of
round-headed lancets and above, traceried wheel windows.
Segment-headed basement windows to south.
Schoolroom, to south-east, has four 3-light cross mullioned
windows with similar basement windows below. South gable has a
panel traceried 4-light pointed arch window flanked by single
lancets. Below, a 3-light window flanked by single light
windows.
INTERIOR: divided and refitted c1980.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: outside, at the west end, a curved
boundary wall with chamfered coping, 2 chamfered piers with
octagonal pyramidal caps, and a pair of iron gates.
