North-west ward range at St George's Hospital, formerly the
Borough Fever Hospital. 1876-82, with mid C20 alterations.
Built by SL Swann. Red brick with blue brick, moulded brick
and ashlar dressings. Flat roofs surrounded by pierced stone
balustrade topped with ornate cast-iron railing. Gothic
Revival style.
EXTERIOR: plinth, string courses, sill and impost bands,
moulded brick cornice. 2 storeys; 14 window range. Ground
floor windows mainly boarded at time of survey.
The building comprises two Y-plan blocks, now connected at
their inner ends by a mid C20 brick link building with 2
casements above, and a full width glazed canopy below,
covering various windows and doors.
Each block has 3 stone mullioned cross casements flanked by
single light transomed windows, all with segmental heads.
Below, similar fenestration with segmental pointed polychrome
heads with panel tracery.
At the inner ends, a canted 2 storey staircase tower with
balustrade and large stack. 3 shouldered segmental pointed
windows with polychrome heads, and above them, blocked round
windows. Blocked ground floor windows.
The left block has no tower, and the corresponding bay has
irregular C20 fenestration.
At the centre of the inner ends, a large dormer with slated
roof, coped gable and pointed arched window.
Splayed projecting bays at the outer ends have a
segment-headed transomed window above, and a similar window
with segmental pointed head and panel tracery below. In each
return angle, 2 similar windows on each floor. At the left
end, one window modified to form a fire escape.
Between the splayed bays, a segment-headed 3-light mullion
window with transom, and below, a pointed arched window.
