Headteacher's house, now offices, and attached boundary walls,
railings and outbuildings. c1884. Probably by Wilson &
Masters, architects of the adjacent school (qv), for the
Ecclesfield School Board. Coursed squared stone with ashlar
dressings and slate roof with coped brick side wall and gable
stacks.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 3 window range. To left, a slightly
projecting gable with a plain sash, and below, a canted stone
bay window with blocking course and 3 plain sashes. Range to
right has a small plain sash, and to its right, a gabled
through-eaves dormer with a larger plain sash. Below, to left,
a C20 half-glazed door with sidelights, under a sloping hood
on wooden brackets. To right, a double plain sash with stone
mullion. Left return has a single storey outshut.
INTERIOR not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: adjoining stone boundary wall with
rounded corners encloses the triangular site. Parkside Road
range has spiked wrought-iron railing with chamfered plinth
and square stone piers with cross-gabled ashlar caps. 4 pairs
of gate piers with wrought-iron gates. Higher range to
Middlewood Road has gabled stone coping and a stepped flat
topped gable adjoining Hillsborough House. Catch Bar Lane
range has a gabled coping to right, with a small gateway. In
the centre, a double gateway. To left, a higher wall with
stepped slab coping, and adjoining outbuildings with hipped
and lean-to roofs.
