GV II*
Kitchen and service rooms to Town Barton (q.v.), now house and store. Late C16-
early C17, partly renovated circa 1970. Volcanic rubble; volcanic stone stacks;
slate and thatched roof. L shaped building with main block facing west with north
facing return at right (south) end. Originally 2 rooms to main block with massive
gable end stack to left (northern) room and rear lateral stack to right room.
Unheated wing. 2 storeys. Regular 3-window front to main block of late C16-early
C17 oak 4-light windows with chamfered or ovolo-moulded mullions. 2 left windows
are to kitchen and are unglazed with shutters. Central kitchen door has chamfered
oak frame and studded plank door. At left end a small 2-light chamfered-mullion
window. Right ground floor window has chamfered mullions which include glazing
rebates and first floor window has ovolo-moulded wullions. All windows have
vertical iron bars. 2-window thatch-roofed south wing of C20 replacement windows.
First floor half dormer has richly-moulded head and framed gable above including
decorative star panel (for Devon a rare rural example of decorative late C16-early
C17 framing); thatched gable over and shaped C19 bargeboards and pendant. Both
wings are gable-ended. Good interior. Large kitchen fireplace is disused and
chimney breast and lintel have been removed, but rear fireplace has chamfered oak
lintel and inserted C19 oven. Internal partition removed. Overall 5-bay ceiling
with chamfered and step-stopped crossbeams. C19 king post roof. South wing has 2
chamfered and step-stopped cross beams and includes fine C17 timber-framed newel
stair with solid oak steps. Barton Court was originally kitchen/bakehouse and
service rooms looking into courtyard and serving Town Barton (q.v). Main range
formerly included framed gables similar to that on south range.
