Circa 1840/50. Corner site with Church Lane. Three storeys stucco faced.
Dentil cornice and parapet, second floor string course. To Union Street:
four windows on second floor, one blind, recessed, two light casements,
plain stucco surrounds, each with frieze and cornice, sills with same
moulding as cornice, break forward from string course, supported by
consoles. The first floor and ground have irregular fenestration due
to sloping site. Next to the corner on first floor is a large rectangular
bay window of three lights, sashes later glazing bars, Doric pilasters,
frieze and bracketed cornice. The centre window is recessed, sash, later
glazing bars, flanked by pilasters with a broad flute, scrolled brackets
and entablature, small iron balcony with stucco piers, on consoles.
Directly below on the ground floor is a recessed window, the base of the
balcony forming its entablature. To the right on a lower first floor
level is an earlier canted bay of three lights, sashes, glazing bars,
pilasters dividing, frieze and shallow cornice, apron. Above this
a window similar to those on the second floor. Set across the corner
with Church Lane on the first floor, is a bowed sash window, glazing
bars intact, small cast iron balcony; the wall above is splayed out
and curves up to rejoin right angle at second floor string course.
On the ground floor adjacent to the corner is a modern caffe front.
No 79 is a small C19 shop to the North at the other end of the front:
plate glass window but retaining flanking pilasters and bracketed
cornice. To Church Lane no windows in upper floors of main block.
Ground floor retains frame of original corner shop with Doric pilasters
and cornice. To the West is a taller hipped roof extension of one window.
Nos 78 to 81 (consec) form a group.
