Garden house. Built in 1820's when the 3rd Lord Ongley was first developing
the garden. Roughcast render probably over brick, with much timber work.
Thatched roof with wood finials. Octagonal plan, of 2 storeys, set into a
steep bank to provide entrance at both levels. In ornate picturesque
("Swiss") style. Pyramidal roof extends on all but N side to form verandah,
that to W single storey only on rustic timber supports, that to E 2-storeyed
with painted timber supports with pegs, probably for climbing plants. N
elevation has chimney with paired octagonal stacks. Arcaded circular porch to
S at upper level with thatched half-conical roof. 7 round-headed arches, all
decorated. with twig-work. Porch dome is decorated with twig-work and pine
cones in floral and geometric patterns. Upper room has French windows flanked
by 2 casements to W, all with octagonal leading. Interior has ornate fretted
wood panelling and fireplace surround. Ground floor rooms, one octagonal one
circular, have studded door and leaded casements to E. Probably used as
service rooms, the interiors are quite plain.
