Farmhouse, now 2 houses, early to mid C17. Squared sandstone rubble with
quoins, stone slate roof with copings on original block. Originally 2
storeys and 3 bays with entrance into gabled cross-wing (which does not
project) at right, axial stack in main range, gable stack in cross-wing and
staircase in outshut at back. Rear of cross wing was soon extended at right
angles to the right to form a cranked plan. Doorway has chamfered jambs, a
Tudor-arched lintel and studded oak door. To its left on ground floor are a
4-light window and a 2-light fire window, then a 2-light window at a lower
level. On first floor are a 3-light window over the door, a 4-light window,
a square recess for a datestone then, at a lower level, the 3-light
mullioned and transomed window of a room approached from staircase landing.
Right-hand return facade of cross-wing has, on ground floor, windows of 3,4
and 4 lights with three 3-light windows above, while gable facade of
extension has a 7-light window on ground floor, a 5-light window above and a
blocked 3-light window to attic. All windows are double chamfered under
separate hoodmoulds and have ovolo-moulded mullions, except for those on the
first floor of the cross-wing which have hollow-chamfered mullions.
Right-hand return of extension has deeply projecting lateral stack.
Interior: Main features of interest are the stone dog-leg staircase, and
fireplace in front room of cross-wing; this has a cambered lintel marked to
resemble voussoirs which rests on jowled jambs.
