FACTORY LANE
No. 2

Cotton mill, now shop, early C19 (the datestone which reads H. Helm 1807 may not be in situ). Coursed sandstone and slate roofs, except on right-hand addition which has stone slates. 3 storeys and 8 bays with a 2-bay projection with heavy quoins to left and a narrow addition under a gable roof to right; this latter carries datestone above what may have been a staircase projection. Lower roof of left-hand projection is original, but top storey of 8-bay block was rebuilt with taller windows c.1900. All windows have plain reveals.
Interior: original construction must have had unsupported beams spanning c. 9m between the walls, but on ground floor and first floor some of these are now supported on cast-iron columns. On ground floor there are also 3 cast-iron columns of cruciform cross-section with U-shaped heads which must have supported the bearings of shafts which drove machinery.
