The Towers
GV II
Pair of houses. c1860. Divided into 7 flats in late C20. White
brick under slate roofs. Monumental symmetrical design.
3-4 storeys. Central element has a 2-window range. The ground
floor has a pair of canted bay windows with 1/1 horned sashes,
of which that to No.12 (right) retains pierced parapet. 2
horned sashes to first floor, that to No.12 with 8/8 glazing
bars, to No.14 without glazing bars. Saw-toothed string course
under second floor. 2 horned sashes in developed architraves
under eaves, that to No.12 with 3/3 glazing bars, to No.14
without. Eaves course of brackets. Gabled roof with large
common stack.
Framing these central bays is one 4-storey square tower right
and left, with shallow clasping pilasters. Ground floor
contains entrance doors under arched heads. The first and
second floors lit through small 4/4 sashes with raised
surrounds. Glazing bars missing to first-floor sash of No.14.
Viewing rooms at top of towers with 2 arched casements to each
facet, with glazing bars. Projecting cornice above and a plain
parapet with caps to clasping pilasters.
Towers in turn framed by a 2-storey, single-bay block right
and left. Both project from facade, have clasping pilasters
and pedimented gable-ends. Ground floor with a canted bay
window fitted with horned sashes without glazing bars. One
Venetian window to first floor of each block, that to No.12
with a central 4/4 horned sash, to No.14 without glazing bars.
INTERIOR: entrance to staircase blocked in No.12. Staircases
are closed-string, with turned balusters and octagonal newels.
