Terraced town house. 1736 by Edward Shepherd, refronted by
Paul Waterhouse 1908. Portland stone front, original brickwork to
rear, slate roof. Consciously asymmetrical elevation with mannerist
neo Adam features. 3 main storeys and basement with attic storey and
steep mansard. 3 windows wide. Entrance bay to left treated
separately and very slightly recessed, the doorway with swept stone
hood; the window above in eared architrave with segmental pediment,
plain windows above with shallow relief keystones to lintels. The two
main right hand bays are elaborated and treated as a separate
composition with channelled ground floor having 2 deeply recessed
sashes with channelling struck to lintels. Giant order of Ionic
pilasters through 1st and 2nd floors, the central one broadened out
with shallow niche at 1st floor and medallion plaque with garland
pendants dividing the half capitals, supporting entablature with
modillion cornice; attic storey has pilaster strips with enriched
pendants, vestigial modillion cornice to parapet surmounted by urns.
Fine surviving original interior with exceptional plasterwork ceilings
to ground and 1st floor rooms as well as elaborate plaster wall
cartouche in ground floor front room and decorative reliefs to walls
of rear room, top lit stone stair with Paul Waterhouse balustrade,
doorcases, cornices etc.
