Flight of 7 locks, the 1st adjoins Manchester Road bridge,
the 7th adjoins Britannia Bridge, Warrington Road, which is
included in this item. 1816. Stone with timber or iron
gates, ground paddles operated by levers, a feature of this
canal. Most locks have number in sunk panel at lower end on
south side. Lock adjoining Manchester Road bridge has panel:
"L No. XIV", iron gates, overflow channel. Lower gates have
crank system for opening and closing because of rebuilding
and widening of bridge. Next lock to south west (No. XV-no
panel) has timber upper and iron lower gates, overflow
channel and raised footbridge dated 1985. Next lock (No. XV1
- no panel) has upper iron and lower timber gates, overflow
channel; timber footbridge. Lock No-.- XV11 (panel cut through
by slot - X missing) has iron gates, overflow channel and
steel footbridge. Lock No. XVlll has timber gates, overflow
channel and steel footbridge. Lock No. X1X has iron gates,
foot bridge and overflow channel. Lock No. XX has iron upper
and timber lower gates, the lower gates with crank system of
operation because of bridge widening, and overflow channel,
Britannia bridge has elliptical arch with key, arch to west
has panel reading: "OPENED 1816 OCTR 22", with 2 roses.
Later iron extension to either side.
