10/69 The Mill

Watermill and millhouse. Late C18/early C19, probably incorporating earlier
elements, altered and converted C20. Limestone rubble with some ashlar
dressings; coursed squared marlstone; Stonesfield-slate and Welsh-slate roofs
with rebuilt brick stacks. Single range with extension to rear. 3 storeys plus
attic. 6-window front of main range has, to right, a symmetrical 3-window
arrangement with a central doorway, and to left has larger section; 2 bays of
which have aligned windows flanking a 6-panel door, but the bay to extreme left
has unaligned windows to first and second floors plus the rubble arch over the
tail race. Windows have ashlar flat arches above renewed sashes:16-pane at
ground and first floors, and 12-pane at second floor. A lower marlstone bay to
right has renewed casements. Rear is irregular with renewed casements and C20
roof dormers, and is partly obscured by a large C19 marlstone rear wing roofed
with Welsh slate, as are the rear slopes of the main roof. Interior: large
inglenook fireplaces soft wood floor structure; substantial portions of the
drive mechanism but only the shaft of the waterwheel.
