Farmhouse. Probably C17, extended in C18. Thinly coursed rubble, cased
timber-frame, stone slate roof, hipped to left; brick end stack to right
hand side at junction with C18 granary extension. Roughly north-west/
south-east alignment, 2 timber-framed cells with dairy extension to left
and granary extension to right both in rubble; former gable access masked
by granary; the whole front forms an elongated hill farm when put in context
with adjoining barn and cow house (qv) to north-west. Two storeys., 3 windows
under segmental heads: small C19 light to left, 4-pane C19 casement to its
right, two 16-pane C20 casements right of ledged C20 entrance door, granary
has tallet stairs at gable end. Interior: stone flagged floors, stop-
chamfers to main ceiling beams, 2 principal rooms divided by a partition,
perhaps plank and muntin with 4-centred arch headed opening. Two further
4-centred heads: one to former gable access with adjacent draw-bolt slots,
to right of fireplace; to its left, another leading to newel stairs. Attached
to the large wooden lintol of the fireplace is a hinged, probably C18, board
to act as a smoke deflector. Weather timber-framing between 2-cell part and
former dairy. Newel stairs: rubble treads, small light to rear elevation,
roofed by series of thin corbelled stones. On the first storey is a 2-
centred head through timber-framed partition between 2 cells. Roof structure
has wind braces, A-frame truss to centre of 2 cells, but next truss to west
formerly an exposed decorative gable end has pegged saltire-cross rising
from collar to upper purlin level. "1720" carved on inner side of lintol at
head of granary steps.
