Terrace town house. 1675-76 with early C.18 remodelling; facade rebuilt in
replica 1960-66; part of Barbon's development of the York House estate.
Brown brick with red brick dressings, slate roof. 4 storeys, basement and
dormered mansard. 3 windows wide with giant quoin pilasters flanking.
Doorway to right with panelled door and delicate late C.18 radial ironwork
to fanlight, in fine early C.18 wood doorcase with panelled reveals and
soffit, flanking fluted Corinthian pilasters, architrave frieze broken
over capitals, elaborately pierced and carved console brackets supporting
large cornice-hood also with panelled soffit. Recessed glazing bar sashes
in exposed box frames under segmental red brick arches, deep red brick
dressings to each floor, the 1st floor windows with raised brick aprons.
Brick gauged plat band over ground floor, moulded brick string as sill
course to 2nd floor and stone cornice below attic storey; parapet with
coping. Wrought iron area railings with pommel-vase finials and good
scrollwork flanking doorway with link extinguishers. The interior
alterations and rebuilding have retained/reset some of the fielded
panelling and moulded cornices, the fluted Doric pilaster hall screen and
fine staircase with cut and carved strings, panelled soffit, 3 twisted
balusters per tread, Corinthian column newels and moulded handrail swept
over them, etc.
