Up Holland Tunnel, west portal

GV II

Portal of railway tunnel. 1846-8. For the Liverpool and Bury
Railway Company. Engineers James and William Thomson.
Sandstone ashlar. A horseshoe arch with deep splayed reveal
and roll-moulded surround; retaining wall of channelled
rock-faced masonry with broad flanking pilasters, a plain
cornice, and a parapet with a central upstand. Forms group
with railway bridge approx 400m west (qv).
