Office building. c.1888 to 1896, by Alfred Waterhouse; altered
and reduced. Blood-red brick and terracotta, with grey granite
to ground floor (roof concealed). Deep rectangular plan
occupying most of island site, with splayed corner to left.
Four storeys (plus modern attic), 6 bays plus the corner, the
2nd and 6th bays breaking forward very slightly; arcaded
ground floor faced with granite, with round-headed arches
(mostly plate-glass windows); round-headed windows to the
upper floors, mostly of 2 lights (but the wider 1st bay
containing single-light windows in addition), those at 2nd
floor with transoms and those at 3rd floor smaller; corbel
tables to the 1st bay and the 3rd to 5th; rebuilt parapet
replacing original gabled roofline and tower. Corner and long
left return wall similar. Interior remodelled.
