Description

WORSLEY THE GREEN
SD 70 SW
1/58 Former Oil Store
(formerly listed
1/10/74 under canal side)
G.V. II.

Oil and powder store for canal and mining operations.
Converted to flats in 1986. 1852 on datestone. English garden
wall bond brick with slate roof and stone dressings. T-shaped
plan with a total of 7 bays and 2 storeys. The building
resembles a medieval tithe barn in some respects. 1986 wings
added to rear. Each bay has a large segmental-arched ground
floor opening with glazed door and window, and a 3-light
first floor window with stone lintel and sill. All the above
openings are of 1986 date. Weathered buttresses which are
angled at corners. Coped gables with finial. A C20 oriel
window to the right gable includes a datestone. It is flanked
by original window openings with flat brick arches. The
additions are executed in a similar style. Interior:
impressive cross-vaulted floor in brick construction. The
heavy wall and floor construction was no doubt to minimise
damage in the case of an explosion.
