Stump of cross shaft and base. Medieval. Stone. Chamfered shaft with
broach stops, approximately 0.8 metre high; set in circular base
approximately 0.3 metre high. The original cross had a cup in the head of
the shaft in which it was customary to leave a coin for needy travellers.
This custom was the subject of a rhyme:
"On Cropton Cross there is a cup
And in that cup there is a sup
Take that cup and drink that sup
And put that cup on Cropton Cross"
Harry Mead, Inside the North York Moors, 1978; p 27.
