Description

NORTH NIBLEY STANCOMBE PARK
ST 7396 at
NGR ST 73859693
8/125 Tunnels and grotto recess
II

Linked tunnels with grotto at north end. c1860 for Rev. David
Edwards. Ashlar and roughly hewn marlstone; brick-lined tunnels.
Long straight tunnel terminated at north end by brick-shelved
recess containing fossils. Just to south of this 2 tunnels enter
at angles. Cross-vault at junction, with central circular light-
hole above. Tunnel is entered using one of the angled entrances,
both with naturalistically hewn marlstone blocks to entrance
surround. At southern end entrance is flanked by large raking
buttresses in ashlar marlstone. Main tunnel is on axis with
Square Court (q.v.). One of a sequence of features in the very
extensive Regency and early Victorian landscaped park and pleasure
garden.

Gloucestershire: The Cotswolds, 1979.)
