1/123 Conduit niche
II
Niche containing former font with conduit. c1860 for Rev. David
Edwards. Ashlar marlstone; limestone font. Square niche with
round-arched top and imposts. Small round-arched recess in niche
contains fragment of tessellated pavement, possibly Roman, but more
likely an imitation. Large circular font bowl on circular base.
Conduit pipe taken up within base feeding font bowl through drain
hole. Water passes out rear of font through small outlet in
niche. Facing font across path is semi-circular area of rough
marlstone paving with concealed water channels, all fed from nearby
springs. One of the features in the very extensive Regency and
early Victorian landscaped park and pleasure garden.
