Description

NAVESTOCK

TQ59NW MURTHERING LANE, Navestock Heath
723-1/4/502 (North side)
Nos.1 AND 2
Randalls Cottages

II

Marked on OS as Randalls Farm.
House, now 2 cottages. C17 but refaced C18. Red brick, Flemish
bond, tile roof. Three window range and off centre stack
reflecting the plan of a 3-celled early C17 timber-framed
house. Sashes and casements, ground floor segment headed but
upper straight, plain reveals. Front door of E cottage in
original lobby-entrance position, W door and stack at end
added to create separate cottage. INTERIOR: in W cottage
(No.1) deep sectioned joists with diminished haunched soffit
tenons into axial joist. Roof butt side purlin type taken
round the corner via a principal diagonal tie-beam joist into
the N wing. Excellent workmanship in C18 re-roofing. Straight
joint in the brickwork suggests that the timber-frame at the
front and sides was replaced in brick before that at the back.
