Built as the front range of the London Fever Hospital 1848-9
to the designs of Charles Fowler and David Mocatta; altered
and added to for housing in 1991. Stone, red brick laid in
Flemish bond, roofs of artificial slate. The range was
composed as a central block of three storeys and three-window
range, double-fronted, wings of two storeys and three-window
range, and single-storey colonnades between them; the
colonnade to the left appears to have been completely rebuilt,
that to the right did not exist at the time of inspection.
Central block has ground floor decorated with chamfered
rustication; flat-arched entrance set back between pilasters
in the soffits bearing a simplified entablature, overlight,
panelled doors of original design with the upper panels
glazed; the flat-arched windows either side also flanked by
pilasters with simplified entablature; storey band; the upper
floors having quoins and three windows each with architraves
and panelled aprons, and each flanked by a Doric pilaster
supporting an entablature now lettered 'OLD ROYAL FREE PLACE';
flat-arched windows to second floor, modillion cornice;
pediment with oculus, formerly for a clock; side stacks;
bracketed oriel to left-hand return.
The wings have ground-floor decorated with chamfered
rustication; flat-arched windows to ground floor; storey band;
sill band to first-floor windows which are segmental-arched
with architraves; modillion cornice; hipped roof; side stack;
three flat-arched windows to inner return, the westernmost
blank.
