Cottage. 1812. Extended and modernised c1975. By John Nash and
George Repton, for JS Harford. Random rubble with brick stacks
and a thatched hipped roof. Single-depth plan. Picturesque
style.
Single storey and attic; 1-window range. An irregular cottage
with a doorway in the right-hand return under a small porch.
The front has a pent roof over an open bay with a rustic tree
support, and a fitted bench; either side are narrow windows
with Maltese cross heads. Leaded casements, 3-lights beneath
the pent, and small dormers to the front and right-hand sides.
Paired diagonal brick stacks.
INTERIOR not inspected, but reported as containing a dogleg
winder stair from the central sitting room, a fireplace and
pantry.
Arranged by Harford for his retired employees. Part of a
composed group forming '...the nec plus ultra of picturesque
layout and design' (Pevsner). The cottages are laid out around
an open green.
