Pair of houses, now one shop. Late C15 with later details.
Renovated 1983. Plastered and colourwashed timber-frame under
a pantile roof. Originally one house with No.1 Castle Street
(qv), the latter forming the 2-storeyed service end. Plinth
course. 2 storeys. Exposed frame of heavy scantling, mostly
re-used. Middle rail to left with a solid brace and fleuron
and rosette decoration. Ground floor with two 6-panelled and
fielded doors and, to left of each, a 6/6 sash window. At
extreme right (east) is a plank door leading to rear passage
under a 4-centred head. First floor with three 6/6 sashes.
Gabled roof. No stack visible. INTERIOR: rear entrance through
a 2-centred arched doorway. West ground-floor wall with 2
blocked 2-centred service doorways formerly leading into No.1
Castle Street. North wall with projecting internal fireplace
re-using 2 late C11 ecclesiastical columns as jambs. Roof is a
2-bay crown post type, the posts octagonal on moulded bases
and with moulded capitals. Tie beams are cranked and supported
by arched braces with pierced tracery carving in the
spandrels. West wall with row of cusped quatrefoils under wall
plate.
