House. c1830-40. Stucco, red Flemish-bond brick to rear, slate
roof with rendered stack to right gable end, brick ridge stack
to rear left and rear left gable end.
Square double-depth plan. Villa-type in classical style.
2 storeys with attics; front is 2-window range. The front
block has a moulded and bracketed eaves cornice extending to
large central gable; a pitched roof spans the front block; a
pitched roof to the right return is gabled to the rear; a
pitched roof to the rest forms a second gable to right of
right return. The attic window to apex of front gable is an
8/8-pane sash with 6/6-pane sashes to first-floor centre and
at eaves level to right.
A slate-roofed verandah spans the front and left return; a C20
door to centre of front and four 6/6-pane sash windows to left
return; the first-floor has 5 sashes, 3 with 6/6-panes to
right, the 2 below gable are taller; 2 with 8/8-panes to left;
a 6/6-pane sash to gabled attic. To right, on the pitched roof
are 2 dormers with 3/3-pane sash windows. Rear, in George
Street, has a door to left, two 6/6-pane sash windows to each
floor on left and 8/8-pane sashes to right.
INTERIOR not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached to front
right (north-east) corner of house a substantial Flemish-bond
yellow brick wall on red Wembdon stone and lias plinth extends
approx 20m forward. Approx 3m high as it meets house, 2m of
red English-bond brick increases height as it sweeps up to
approx 5m in centre. The high central part has 3 circular
stone surrounds to circular swivel windows; the 2 outer ones
each have 2 vertical glazing bars and some glass. Traces of
lime wash to this central part imply that this was end wall of
a former ventilated conservatory. Blocked-up doors to each
end, that to right has timber lintel. Attached to rear left
corner (south-west) up to first-floor level is approx 35m of
brick wall which sweeps down in stages along George Street to
a height of approx 1m at corner with Dampiet Street.
