Terrace of 7 pairs of houses and 1 house. c1820s. Dressed
stone and roughly coursed rubble; No.15 is rendered and has
grouted scantle slate roof, otherwise roofs are asbestos
slate; No.15 (left) has slate-hung gable end; brick end
stacks; cast-iron ogee gutters to Nos 2, 3, 6, 7, 10-13.
Seven pairs of houses with mirror-image double-depth (ground
floor) plans and a 2-room plan house. Each house of the pairs
has a reception room at the front and a kitchen behind plus
various extensions, parallel entrance halls in the centre;
house (No.1) has 2 receptions rooms at the front flanking a
central passage. 2 storeys; overall 23-window range.
Structurally, a virtually intact terrace with all the original
openings and some original doors and windows; round-headed
doorways with blind fanlights; window openings spanned by
shallow arches.
Pairs have symmetrical 3-window fronts. No.1 has doorway
slightly left of centre to provide space for access beside
rear wing (No.48 Carclew Street, not included). Original
panelled doors to Nos 2, 6 & 12; original sashes with glazing
bars to Nos 6 & 15; some original sashes with intermediate
glazing bars removed (Nos 10, 11, 12), otherwise later sashes
except for Nos 1 (ground floor), 3 (1st floor) & 14 which have
C20 windows.
INTERIOR not inspected but noted as having original
fireplaces, panelled shutters and doors. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES:
grouted rubble walls, across the stone-paved courtyard in
front, have dressed granite copings. Walls removed in front of
Nos 8-14. Walls linking service blocks to rear. Carclew
Terrace is one of the most complete examples of small planned
early C19 terrace houses in the south-west.
