Terrace of 10 town houses. 1851. By William Holtom, builder.
Brick with buff headers; slate roof with brick end stacks and
4 cross-axial stacks. Georgian style. 2 storeys; 10-window
range. Top brick cornice. Pairs of round-headed entrances with
blind fanlights, most with 6-flush-panel doors, but Nos 39,
40, 41 and 46 have C20 doors; No.41 has fanlight with radial
glazing bars; Nos 42 and 43 have paired entrances with
panelled pilasters and overlights to 6-flush-panelled doors;
entablature continued over flanking canted bay windows with
4:16:4-pane sashes; segmental-headed entries to left of No.40
and right of No.43 with plank doors. Segmental-headed windows
with 16-pane sashes, but No.39 has C20 casements, No.41 has
4-pane sashes and No.46 has C20 casement to 1st floor. College
Lane is part of the development of the land on which the
medieval priests' college stood until 1799, in an area of
early C19 housing of good quality.
