- II Almshouses)
Row of 6 almshouses, dated 1841, now 4 dwellings. Dressed stone on plinth
of large blocks, (random rubble sides and rear), slate roof with seven
2-flue chimneys. Long rectangular plan, 2 storeys, single-pile with a
continuous single-storey outshut to the rear. All the houses are of one
bay with the doorway on the left and one window on each floor, but the
1st and 5th doorways have been replaced by windows; doorways have plain
stone cases, and Nos. 3 and 4 have studded doors with long fleur-de-lys
headed hinges; all windows have 2 round-headed lights. At centre of
first floor is a large stone tablet in a moulded frame, with incised
lettering:
These six Cottages were Erected
AD 1841
By Susanna Daughter and sole Heiress of
Peter Brooke of Astley Hall in the
County of Lancaster Esqr; for the benefit
of Poor Persons, Natives of, resident in, and
belonging to the Township of
Chorley.
