3/52 Lower Stowford Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Probably C16 with C17 improvements, modernised in C19. Plastered cob on
stone rubble footings; hall has a stone rubble stack with roughly dressed quoins
topped with C19 brick and the service end has a late C19 brick stack; corrugated
iron roof (formerly thatch).
3-room-and-through-passage plan house facing south-east with the inner room at the
right (north-eastern) end. A fourth room at the left end and used as a store was
probably added in C19. The hall has a large front projecting lateral stack and the
service end room has a large rear projecting lateral kitchen stack. C19 and C20
outshots to rear. Main house is 2 storeys.
Irregular 3-window front. Most are late C19-early C20 casements with glazing bars.
The ground floor hall window and the window of the inner room chamber are a little
earlier; 3-light casements with rectangular panes of leaded glass. The front
passage doorway contains a C20 plank door. Alongside it to the right is the hall
stack with weathered offsets and the lower part of the original chimney shaft, the
top replaced with C19 brick. To the left there is a secondary doorway into the
service end room (the kitchen) and at the left end another doorway to the store. The
roof is half-hipped to right and gable-ended to left. Over the service end room the
roof steps down in level from right to left. All the lower section may be C19.
Interior: only limited access was possible at the time of survey. What was seen
shows that the house has had little modernisation since the C19. The layout
suggests that the original house is well-preserved even though few early features
are exposed. The service end is mainly C19. The kitchen fireplace here is brick
with a plain oak lintel and fire window. The passage screens are plastered over and
the hall fireplace is blocked. The hall was floored in the mid C17 with an axial
beam, soffit-chamfered with double bar-scroll stops. Some probably C17 plank doors
with coverstrips. The inner room and first floor were not available for inspection
but the early roof is said to survive.
