3/8 Gate piers and railings adjoining
- to south of New Lodge
GV II
Gate piers and railings. Circa 1800. Piers and connecting walls of red brick
including bands of flint and coping and caps of limestone ashlar; cast iron
railings.
Extending southwards from New Lodge is a railed wall containing 2 wide gateways,
that at the south end is now disused. The northern gateway piers are square in
section with rebated corners. They have moulded caps and bases and are surmounted
by carved lions sejant holding shields bearing the Rolle arms. There is another
similar pier a short distance to the south which is surmounted by a pineapple vase.
The southern gate piers are similar except that they include 5 bands of flint. They
have pineapple vase caps. The low connecting walls also include a band of flint and
have limestone coping. The railings have spear heads and include a dograil of
diagonal crosses. Only the southern gate way retains its gate which has different
rails; these have fleur-de-lys heads and have diagonal cross braces.
