House, now garage. Late C18. Flemish-bond brickwork with tuck
pointing, limestone dressings, brick end stacks and a pantile
valley roof. Double-depth plan. Mid-Georgian style. 2 storeys;
5-window range.
A symmetrical front has rusticated pilaster strips, frieze and
a cornice with ball dentils, and coped parapet and gables. A
semicircular-arched doorway has a Gibbs surround and an open
pediment with ball dentils, entablature blocks with roundels,
and Tuscan columns. 5 stepped voussoirs with dropped keys to
plate-glass sashes. The middle semicircular-arched first-floor
window has a Gibbs surround. The rear elevation has openings
with 7 stepped voussoirs and 8/8 sashes and a central arched
stair window.
INTERIOR: ground-floor front opened out to form a garage; the
back left room retains its cornice and large ceiling rose, and
a plain marble fireplace. The cornice details are otherwise
only found on Harley Place, Clifton (qv), and the house has an
uncommon combination of late C18 details with earlier-styled
brickwork and windows, in a decidedly unfashionable part of
the City. An important survival.
