GV I

Gateway to abbey precinct. Post-Reformation, probably C16
using medieval material. Squared red sandstone. Gothic
carriage arch spanning Abbey Approach coupled with pedestrian
gate in wall that links to Capella Extra Portas (qv). The
large arch is double-chamfered and has moulded hood with
carved stops (weathered); ragged parapet wall. Pedestrian gate
has chamfered and cavetto 3-order arch under hoodmould with
stops. On the site of the original outer gate of the abbey
precinct.
