Description

MANCHESTER

SJ8498 BRADLEY STREET
698-1/17/23 (South East side)
08/06/84 Nos.4, 6 AND 8
and attached screen walls

GV II

Six very small dwellings grouped 2, 2 and 2 in three separate
blocks linked by screen walls, and attached to the rear of Nos
69-73 Lever Street (q.v.); and perhaps originally service
wings to these. Late C18, altered. Orange-red brick in English
garden wall bond, with mono-pitched graduated slate roofs.
Each block is rectangular, at right-angles to Bradley Street,
with one cottage facing the street and another facing the yard
behind. Two low storeys, each block with one window at 1st
floor; simple doorways with wood surrounds and board doors
(No.4 now blocked); one segmental-headed window at ground
floor, No.6 now blocked and the others boarded; damaged
windows at 1st floor (3, 2 and 3 lights). High screen walls
between the blocks, with doorways to the yards (Nos 4 and 8
blocked at time of survey); yard sides not inspected. History:
formed part of original development of site between 1787 and
1794, by Charles Bradley, who built Nos 69-73 Lever Street.
Rare survival in city centre.
