Stepney Station House
II
Former railway station, now house. c1853, with late C20
alterations. By William Botterill. For the York & North
Midland Railway. Red and yellow brick with painted ashlar
dressings and hipped and gabled slate roofs. 2 side wall and
central ridge stacks, all with a central round-arched opening,
and 2 smaller gable stacks. Windows are mainly plain sashes
with moulded round-arched ashlar surrounds and keystones.
Those on the platform side have bracketed sills.
Central block with single-storey wings. Central block has
plinth, corner pilasters and bracketed eaves. 2 storeys;
3-window range. Recessed central bay on platform side has a
pair of small round-headed windows and each flanking gable has
a single larger window. Below, central pilastered surround
with entablature, containing a window, and on either side,
similar windows.
Flanking wings have brick angle pilasters and wooden modillion
eaves. Each has a projecting central gable, that to right with
a mounded round-arched doorway with beaded 6-panel door with
overlight and sidelights. That to left has a pair of small
round-arched windows and above, a roundel. Left return has a
moulded round-arched doorcase with keystone and C20 door with
overlight.
Main block rear elevation is similar to the platform front,
with a pair of small blank windows above, and below, a central
C20 door with overlight.
The station was built on the Victoria Dock line of the York &
North Midland Railway.
