Granary. C17. Timber-framed, weatherboarded, roofed with
handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays aligned approximately NW-SE.
C19 ancillary building attached to W, not of special
architectural or historic interest.
Single storey. Supported on 8 piers of red brick in English
bond, original. Plain boarded and ledged door in NE side, with
a ladder of 3 treads below. A slatted vent in this side is a
C19 alteration, the sill and stud below it of softwood.
Blocked original window in middle of SW side, with 3 diamond
mortices for the mullions of an unglazed window, sill
replaced. INTERIOR: hardwood frame of high quality, fully
jointed and pegged. Unjowled posts, heavy studding, primary
straight bracing. 2 face-halved and bladed scarfs in NE
wallplate, one in SW wallplate. Some hair plaster infill
between the studs in NW and SE walls. The 2 internal tie-beams
each have a branching spur tie on each side, fully jointed and
pegged to the tie-beam and with a barefaced lap dovetail to
the wallplate; only the SE of the 2 has queen struts to the
collar. Clasped purlin roof, rafters of horizontal section
halved and pegged at the apices, with bird- mouthed
intermediate collars in the bays. This is a rare survival, and
has been little altered, meriting special care.
